Snake Bite Update

Potter coming this morning.  Still in pain and has huge neck.  Copperhead bites have been common for us living in the middle of the forest.  I think all the dogs have been tasted by the snake at least once, one dog twice.  The lucky dog who has been bitten twice (Jasper ~ see his pic) might not survive another bite, so he's always on a short-leash.  This a.m. update, there's a black snake in my birdhouse. I am SO mad.  Be careful where you place your hands out there digging around in your dirt. Debi

  1. Snakes..Ugh. My hubby is from the South, Louisiana and Ft. Bragg when in the military. He told me you are to wear boots every time you go out to garden in the yard. We are supposed to have bad snakes in Eastern Washington and Oregon but don't hear too much about them...I would be mad too if a snake were in with my chickens!

  2. I am glad Potter is a little better. That must be a continuous bother living among those kinds of snakes. Iowa had rattlesnakes but we have developed enough land to eliminate them. Garter snakes are our only problem, not poisonous but like to over populate the property. I ship them to the farm fields a few miles away.

  3. Poor Potter. I have lots of non-poisonous snakes on my property and my dog always goes after them. I just googled to see if New Jersey has any poisonous ones and we have two but they are rarely seen. I like it that snakes eat mice because I'm terrified of them. Snakes not so much. Your farm is beautiful.

  4. I'm so sorry to read about your dog Debi! I can't imagine witnessing that. We have garter snakes around here but I have plenty of garlic planted and it keeps them away. I don't blame you for being upset, and now a snake is in the birdhouse? What can you do about it?
All the best, hope your dog is better.

  9. Hope Potter recovers completely. Our female rottweiler was bitten by a timber rattler in our backyard 3 years ago. Here's the link to my movie showing her swollen neck.
