Hope for the Best & Prepare for the Worst

Well, that's exactly what we're doing - preparing for whatever is to come.  We're a little more west of the coast, so hopefully we'll get a good soaking over the weekend.  But, our friends and family on the coast I fear are going to get hammered.  Interesting, earlier in the year I read an add in the local agriculture paper from a family who lived at the coast and were looking for a shelter or another farm further west that they could bring their animals to in the event of a  hurricane or some other disaster. I hope they found one.  As far as preparedness just in case Irene does come further west, I think we've got things covered.  The hay has been covered and anchored down with tarp.  The horses water troughs have been cleaned and filled full.  We have several more clean tubs we will fill with water tomorrow just in case we lose power. Extra shavings and a little extra feed were bought today.  Flashlights have new batteries.  The camp lanterns and camp stove are where we can find them.  We're stocked with water bottles and extra larger jugs of water and so forth.  The property and decks have been cleaned up, umbrella taken down and so forth.  All vehicles have been tanked up.  We've done this before and it's no fun, but you just have to be prepared.  I hope all of you in the path of Irene stay safe.  ~ Debi

  4. All of these things are on my list of stuff to do tomorrow ... except for the horse stuff. This storm seems to keep slipping a bit to the west, which could bring our place in Virginia into the path of the aftermath. I remember what Hurricane Isabel did a few years ago, and we have quite a bit to do to get ready. Here's wishing you rain, little wind, and no damage.

  5. I still have to move all the junk into the shed. ha! Especially my wagon and grill. I'll have to rearrange first and, hopefully, do that today. I worked yesterday so, should have today off. I think business is picking up, though. Had too much to finish yesterday. That's a good sign.

  7. Big Apple evacuating. Heading upstate to hunker down. It will be all hands on deck to do just as you are doing. No kids here but animals and elderly will take priority. I, for one, respect and never underestimate Mother Nature's power Safety to all!

  8. Dear Debi ~ My thoughts and prayers are going out for all of you in Irene's path. Monday morning it looked like she was going to hit us way down here, but she veered north/eastward, and stayed that way, for which we are grateful.
We got wind and rain from her yesterday as she slowly passed us by. It is still windy this morning.

May you all be safe and your family also who are on the coast.

    Love and hugs ~ FlowerLady

  10. Stay Safe and when in doubt, take cue from your horsies! We had a terrible storm the other night and they were calling for tornados. I took comfort though in seeing that my horses we laid back munching their hay. If there had been a tornado on the horizon, I know they would have cued me in!

  12. Having lived in coastal SC for 34 years I am totally tuned in to the hurricanes and as soon as one begins to form I still begin going through the mental checklist; water, canned goods, batteries, candles....etc.
It's exhausting to prepare for the storm - but at least we do have advance warnings of them - just think how it would have been in earlier times!
Sounds like you have your ducks in a row. Good luck! I hope all the preparation is for naught!

  13. We too are keeping our eye out, luckily we don't have to worry about having a boat in the water anymore. Hope Irene is gentle on all of us! You sound like such a good horse mama getting all prepared for them too! Stay safe. ~Lili

  15. Hey, you are from NC as well, I see. We are too far west, I'm sure but I wouldn't mind some of that rain. I have been wondering what all the people with farm animals do along the coast and what about all the wild ponies/horses along the outerbanks?
